Chunk Pruning

Chunk pruning is the process of automatically removing unused or abandoned chunks from a Minecraft world to help reduce the overall world size and improve server performance. Over time, players explore large areas of the world, generating many new chunks along the way. These chunks are saved to disk, even if no one ever visits them again.

Chunk pruning cleans up these unused areas by deleting abandoned chunks that have not been occupied by players for more than a few minutes in total. This process is useful for keeping the world size manageable, reducing backup times, improving performance, and preparing for new world generation updates. A prune is performed whenever the server gets close to the file size limit of 200GB.

Backups are taken before each chunk prune and kept for 45 days as a precaution. While it is extremely rare for player structures to be deleted by a chunk prune, they can be restored with little difficulty. If you have any additional questions about this process, feel free to reach out to the server owner on Discord.
